I've given this unit quite a work out over the last few months and it hasn't skipped a beat. Off hand, I can't think of a better bang for your buck.
As my title suggests, even more distressing was the fact that the DVD player quit recognizing DVDs a year after I received it. I am not so much bothered by the lack of a TV tuner as I was not having a display to tell me the tape location of the VHS, which is handy when you are recording on tape from the TV. I can still play them on my computer, so I know the DVDs are not the problem. It is easy to set up. Nevertheless, my experience was not a good one. I had a Panasonic that split up the recordable area of the tape into five sections, beginning to end.
The VHS player still works. As I indicated, it is a refurbished unit, so this opinion should not carry as much weight as those for units bought as new items. A refurbished unit of this model was purchased for me as a gift. It is a DVD player and a VHS recorder/player. I tried using several wet and dry cleaners to no avail.
I returned this as I could not hook it up to my older TV.If I was shown the 'back' of the product I would not have ordered it.
I love my Philip VCR & DVD Player,it hasn't never let me down.Plays all my dvd's & old VHS tapes great. The best thing about it.I got it for a steal.Price,39.95.I got a great buy, thank you kids.Life been good to me.
I'm currently shopping for a replacement for this paperweight if anyone has any recommendations. it's because of that ridiculous progressive scan feature. Right out of the box, it froze while playing brand new DVD's. really. Even if you eject the dvd, power down, etc., it will STILL remember this, and only want to start from your stopping point. Finally - the menu features are totally not intuitive, which is just icing on this grouch's cake. really. Oh, it won't play that.
Whoever invented Progressive Scan perhaps wanted to design another circle of hell. Ironically enough, my lower priced refurbished Daewoo plays everything, and I have yet to have any issue with it. In purchasing a DVD/VCR combo, I wasn't looking for any special features, really, I just wanted a reliable name brand that would allow me to watch both DVD and VHS without too much of an ordeal.Words cannot begin to describe how much I regret purchasing this player for a couple of very simple reasons. hey, i know, let's use the DVD player cleaning disc. If you stop or turn off the player for any reason, you cannot tell the player that when you put it back in you don't want it to start up from your stopping point again.
